Detroit Flooring Veteran Named to INSTALL LM Committee
A floor covering veteran from Detroit is the newest member of an international committee charged with increasing the skill of flooring installers.
Tom Lutz, 38, of Detroit, will serve on the International Labor-Management Committee for the Floorcovering Industry, a group that is sponsored by the United Brotherhood of Carpenters. The Committee oversees an ongoing initiative to increase the quality and professionalism of floorcovering installers through a program called INSTALL (International Standards and Training Alliance).
Lutz is director of floor covering for INSTALL Detroit, whose members belong to Local Union 1045. Lutz became a union floor layer 1990, after first honing his floor covering skills in the residential market. In 1999, he was promoted to business representative/organizer, and last year was named director of floor covering for INSTALL Detroit. Lutz was a member of the development team that created the original INSTALL curriculum. He is also a trustee to Local 1045 and delegate for the Local to the Michigan Regional Council. Lutz is INSTALL certified in both resilient and carpet installations.
Part of Lutz' Labor-Management committee work will be creating alliances with major mills and manufacturers. INSTALL places technical and education experts from leading mills and manufacturers into the role of advising on INSTALL curriculum, ensuring that INSTALL professionals will learn what is needed in the market.
